Expanding on our discussion of African Americans and Labor, today we spotlight Alexander Miles who is best known for his invention of the automatic elevator door mechanism. It is believed that he was inspired to invent the automatic elevator door after witnessing or nearly experiencing an accident where his daughter was almost injured due to an open elevator shaft. Therefore, in 1887, he patented a system that allowed elevator doors to open and close automatically, improving safety and convenience. Before his invention, elevator doors had to be manually operated, which could be hazardous. His innovation helped make elevators more reliable and efficient, especially in multi-story buildings. Miles’ contribution is considered a key development in the evolution of modern elevators.

Building on our theme of African Americans and Labor, presented today is businessman and inventor Alfred L. Cralle who is best known for inventing the ice cream scoop. In 1897, he patented the "Ice Cream Mold and Disher" a mechanical device designed to easily scoop and dispense ice cream with one hand. His invention was unique because it prevented ice cream from sticking to the scoop and eliminated the need for two hands or additional tools to remove the ice cream.
Despite his invention becoming widely used, Cralle never profited significantly from it, as many similar designs emerged over time. His contribution remains significant in culinary history, as his design laid the foundation for modern ice cream scoops still used today.

Maintaining our focus on African Americans and Labor, our focus today is on Dr. Patricia Bath, a pioneering ophthalmologist, inventor, and advocate for blindness prevention. She is best known for inventing the Laserphaco Probe in 1986, a device that improved cataract surgery by using a laser to remove cataracts more precisely and with less pain. She became the first Black woman to receive a medical patent related to ophthalmology. She co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness in 1976, emphasizing that eyesight is a basic human right.
Dr. Bath was the first Black female physician to receive a medical patent. She was also the first Black woman to complete an ophthalmology residency at Columbia University and the first woman to chair an ophthalmology residency program in the U.S. at UCLA. Her work revolutionized eye surgery and helped restore vision to many patients, including those who had been blind for decades.

The national Black History Month theme African Americans and Labor connects to black inventors by highlighting how their innovations have had a lasting impact on, both, society and the modern workforce. Many black inventors have created products or systems that transformed industries, improved efficiency, and contributed to economic growth, ultimately shaping the labor market.
Their contributions go beyond just the inventions themselves; they created new opportunities and inspired future generations to become inventors, entrepreneurs, and leaders in various industries, all while challenging and overcoming labor-related struggles and discrimination. The legacy of these inventors continues to shape the diverse workforce we see today.
Each day this month we will highlight an inventor or entrepreneur who has made a significant impact on our society. Today we highlight Frederick McKinley Jones, inventor and entrepreneur, best known for his contributions to the development of refrigeration technology. He invented the first portable air conditioning unit for trucks, which greatly improved the transportation of perishable goods. His innovations in refrigeration helped transform the food distribution industry, allowing for longer shelf life and reducing food spoilage.
In addition to his refrigeration work, Jones held over 60 patents throughout his career, covering a range of inventions including those related to sound equipment and automotive devices. In addition to serving as a sergeant in World War I, he was also a co-founder of the Thermo King Corporation, which specialized in refrigeration systems. Due to his contributions to refrigeration technology, he is called the "Father of Refrigerated Transportation" and the "King of Cool."
