Reading Little Legends to Class

This annual event at SHES is one of the highlights of our Black History Month celebration. Under the leadership of Ms. Jen Spivey, African American readers volunteer their time to read a book from black authors. "It is important that every student sees themselves in the books we read in school. This helps to foster both a knowledge of their history and their future," says Mrs. Matlock, the school principal.

We thank the brothers from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Delta Omicron Chapter for reading to each class today. Please check out information about our event on the National Council of Teachers of English website: https://ncte.org/calendar/category/african-american-read-in-aari/

This year's book picks are Little Leaders Bold Women in Black History and Little Legends Exceptional Men in Black History by Vashti Harrison. Each classroom will receive a book for their classroom library to commemorate the event.
