Muhammad Ali was an American professional boxer and activist. Nicknamed "the Greatest", he is regarded as one of the most significant sports figures of the 20th century and is often regarded as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. In 1999, he was named Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and the Sports Personality of the Century by the BBC. Muhammad Ali’s advocacy for racial justice began with his awareness and experience of racism and white supremacy as a young man in Louisville, Kentucky.

Our BIS Jr. Seahawks are shouting congratulations to the SDHS Seahawk Wrestling Team this morning! We are so proud of you for being 5 (consecutive) time 2A State Champions!


Ida B. Wells was an American investigative journalist, educator, and early leader in the civil rights movement. She was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Wells dedicated her career to combating prejudice and violence, and advocating for African American equality, especially that of women.


Jesse Owens was an American track and field athlete who won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games. As the African American son of a sharecropper and the grandson of slaves, Owens was encouraged (along with other athletes) to boycott the Olympic Games since they were being held in Nazi-ruled Germany. He ultimately participated and was the most successful athlete at the Games.

BIS Families: The BIS & Beyond After School Academy will be canceled two days next week, Monday February 12th and Wednesday February 14th. Please plan on either having your child picked up at dismissal or ride the bus home.


Our 6th grade scholars have been researching the influential historical figures behind the quotes we have been sharing each day during Black History Month. Our topic is threat assessments. We want you to understand the steps we take to keep our school community safe in the event of a threat.

Booker T. Washington was an American educator, author, orator, and adviser to several presidents of the United States. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants. Booker T. Washington was a key proponent of African-American businesses and one of the founders of the National Negro Business League.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American Baptist minister, activist, and political philosopher who was one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. A Black church leader and a son of early civil rights activist and minister Martin Luther King Sr., Dr. King advanced civil rights in the United States through nonviolence and civil disobedience.
