Carter Godwin Woodson was an American historian, author, journalist, and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. He was born in Virginia in 1875. Woodson was the fourth of nine children born to parents who had been enslaved. At the time, schools were not including African American history in their curriculum. He worked tirelessly throughout his life to remedy this problem.

In February, we celebrate Black History Month. This month was created to bring attention to African Americans who made contributions to United States history. During this month we honor all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today. Join us in celebrating them and their important contributions to our history!
