School Celebrates Farm to School Month with Tasting Event

Snow Hill, MD, October 3, 2024 - Snow Hill Middle School celebrated National Farm to School Month today with a school wide tasting event featuring local grower Cross Farms.

October is National Farm to School Month, a time to celebrate connections happening all over the country between schools, food, and local farmers! Farm to School enriches the connection communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by enhancing food purchasing and education practices at schools and early education sites. Locally sourced meals nourish our bodies while also presenting a more sustainable option for our planet.

As part of Farm to School Month and Homegrown School Lunch Week, Snow Hill Middle School students participated in a schoolwide tasting event in collaboration with SNAP-Ed nutrition educator, Caitlin Daw, and local farmer, Carol Cross.  Students were given the opportunity to try a Greek broccoli and cauliflower salad using produce from Cross Farms.

Worcester County Public Schools started incorporating Cross Farm’s naturally grown produce into their school lunches last year and this partnership has helped students all over Worcester County gain access to healthy foods. Many students live in a world where they believe that the fruits and vegetables that they consume come from the shelves of a grocery store and not from a farm.

By participating in Farm to School Month, WCPS is helping students to have a greater understanding of where their food comes from and how agriculture has an impact on their health. Farm to School empowers children and their families to make informed food choices, which leads to a healthier community.
