Sarah Blackburn was named a Maryland finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Established by Congress in 1983, the PAEMST are the highest honors bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teaching. Ms. Blackburn is one of three educators in Maryland to be named as a finalist.
Awardees reflect the expertise and dedication of the Nation's teaching corps, and they demonstrate the positive impact of excellent teachers on student achievement. The National Science Foundation administers for the PAEMST on behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Ms. Blackburns' application provided evidence of deep content knowledge, exemplary pedagogical skills, student assessment expertise, reflective teaching, leadership, and improved student learning. She is willing to share her expertise and craft with fellow teachers and has provided professional learning for her colleagues at the school and county level. Most recently, she was promoted from 8th grade math and Algebra teacher to Instructional Mathematics Coach for Grades 6, 7, & 8 and Grade 8 Algebra. As a coach, Ms. Blackburn will share her enthusiasm for creating engaging and powerful lessons.
If Ms. Blackburn is the recipient of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, she will be awarded the following:
- A certificate signed by the President of the United States.
- A paid trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities.
- A $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.
- An opportunity to build lasting partnerships with colleagues across the nation.
