WORCESTER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS -

The Board of Education determines the policies of the County's educational system and prescribes rules and regulations for the conduct and management of the schools. The Board, through its executive officers, the Superintendent, and professional staff, exercises control and supervision over the school system.

• Appoint the Superintendent of Schools.

• Determine the educational and instructional policies.

• Approve rules and regulations for the conduct and management of schools.

• Maintain programs for the education of children with disabilities.

• Appoint personnel and establish salaries.

• Designate school attendance boundaries.

• Prepare and adopt a school system budget.

• Have accounts audited and annually reported.

The Board of Education works for the citizens of Worcester County in providing the best education possible for every student. Interested persons are encouraged to attend all public meetings.

At each meeting, there is a Public Participation (Individuals/Delegations) section listed on the agenda. This is the appropriate time for persons to briefly address the Board on matters that are not on the agenda. (Time limit: 1 - 2 minutes.) Guidelines for public participation are outlined below.

• All individuals who sign up to address the Worcester County Board of Education may do so for one to two minutes regarding information, commendations, or concerns, which may need future Board attention. Concerns that are specific to an individual will not be discussed in open session and should be directed to appropriate district personnel for investigation. When called to address the Board, speakers must state your name and address for the record.

The Worcester County Board of Education's public meetings are usually held on the third Tuesday of each month and begin at 12:30 p.m. unless otherwise specified. Parents and community persons are encouraged to attend Board meetings. Meetings are held to determine the policies of the school system and to prescribe the rules and regulations for the conduct and management of the schools. Each month, instructional programs are reviewed and matters ranging from personnel to building maintenance, to the operating budget are discussed.

Agendas and minutes for all open sessions are available for download and are accessible through a link provided in the Board Documents section. Minutes are also kept on file as a permanent record.

Closed Sessions are scheduled to discuss personnel matters, acquisition of property, and collective bargaining; to obtain legal advice; and to address other matters in accordance with Maryland Article 810-508.
