Showell Elementary School to Dismiss Early in June 2020
Posted on 01/14/2020

Newark, MD, January 14, 2020– This week, Worcester County Public Schools announced that Showell Elementary School will end the 2019-2020 school year on June 5, 2020, following receipt of a waiver from the state.

Construction of the new Showell Elementary School, located directly behind the existing school, began in October 2018, and is proceeding on schedule. A critical component of the project’s completion requires the demolition of the existing building. As such, on behalf of the Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools Lou Taylor requested a waiver from State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Salmon, which has been granted.

Under the waiver, students at Showell Elementary School will end the school year on Friday, June 5, 2020. Teachers and staff will still report to work through the end of the contractual school year. All other Worcester County Public Schools will complete the 2019-2020 school year in accordance with the calendar approved by the Board of Education.

“I am grateful that the request for a waiver of the 180-day requirement has been approved,” said Superintendent of Schools Lou Taylor. “As the Showell project continues toward completion, this additional time will ensure that the new Showell Elementary School will open safely for the start of the 2020-2021 school year.”

In an effort to help facilitate planning, parents of Showell Elementary School students will be notified today of the early dismissal.

“As this early closure will likely impact many of our families’ childcare plans, I wanted to communicate this information to you as early as possible, so you can make advance arrangements,” said Showell Elementary School Principal Diane Shorts in a letter to parents. “I also want to assure you that even with the early dismissal for Showell students, your child will still be attending school well above the state’s mandated minimum school hour requirement.”
