In Worcester County, our afterschool programs focus heavily on helping students academically. In addition, we are proud that
Buckingham Elementary School offers a nutritional cooking class for our 2ndgraders called “Just Eat!”. Just Eat focuses on teaching the students about nutrition and how to make the right choices when it comes to food. It is a wonderful supplement to our Integrated Health Literacy program during the regular school day.

Mrs. Robin Tomaselli, owner of Baked Desserts, and her assistant Michelle, do a fantastic job of working with our kids educating them on preparing healthy meals. They’ve even taught them a few exercise routines they can do! During the second afterschool session, the “Just Eat!” students made nutritious pizzas, brownies made with avocado and black beans, parfaits with fresh fruit and many other yummy foods. The students learned about measuring ingredients and even learned about different herbs used in cooking.

The course always starts with a discussion about the food groups and ended with a quick fitness exercise. The students had such a great time that they didn’t even realize how much they were learning!  Our “Just Eat!” students will be attending a field trip to the Good Earth Market where they will get to explore the market’s fresh foods and take a tour through the kitchen to see how some of the dishes are prepared. This kind of real-world, experiential learning, is vital to building healthy, responsible, educated members of our community.

PES’s afterschool CARE program is funded through 21stCentury Community Learning Centers grants. You can support local afterschool programs like this through volunteerism, advocacy and in-kind donations.
