Senior Scholar Athletes Recognized

Six Worcester County Public School student athletes - a female and male from each high school - were recognized at the 14th Annual Bayside Conference Senior Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet. The dinner banquet was held on May 5 in Dorchester County. The 2014 scholar athletes are Taylor Zimmerman and Logan Stanley from Pocomoke High School; Breck Ramsay and Alex Shockley from Snow Hill High School; and Rebecca Lederman and Daniel Beck from Stephen Decatur High School.

The Bayside Conference began recognizing students as Senior Scholar Athletes in 2001. The criterion for selection includes a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better, without any failing grades. In addition, the student must participate in at least two sports during the student's senior year. A total of 35 students were recognized by the Bayside Conference in 2014.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Michael Vienna, Athletic Director for Salisbury University. Because Vienna said only 7-8 percent of high school athletes play collegiate sports and less than 1 percent of college athletes advance to professional sports, he said, "Dream big, but have a great backup plan." The backup plan, according to Vienna, is a great education.
