Beyond the Bell: Afterschool Success Stories
is a new weekly web featurette showcasing the opportunities offered to students through afterschool programs across the county. Beyond the Bell is published every Tuesday.

Authored by Matthew Hoffman

Students often learn best from their peers! Students at Pocomoke High School in their Academy 100 Afterschool program are traveling to Pocomoke Middle School every Tuesday to provide peer mentoring and academic support for students in need. Ms. Ott, Pocomoke High School math teacher and afterschool SHOP (Students Helping Others Prosper) advisor, believes the students in our community truly care for one another and want to help. The Academy 100 afterschool program provides the opportunity for that help! The SHOP students work with Ms. Jen Smith's middle school students to increase their math achievement, play interactive math games and become positive role models for younger students. In addition, research shows that the most effective way to learn something, is to teach it! So, this program is mutually beneficial.

The program is funded through a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant. You can support local afterschool programs like this through volunteerism, advocacy and in-kind donations.
