Every Monday afternoon, third grade students at the Snow Hill Elementary School CARE Afterschool Academy, participate in a fun, game-based, math class called Shake, Rattle and Roll. Students use math tools such as playing cards, dice, shaker boxes, and dominoes to help them practice math skills and concepts. SHES teachers, Mrs. Clara Outten and Mrs. Elizabeth Singer use school assessments and teacher input to determine what skills to teach to prepare them for success in the classroom as well as on the state assessment.

Game-based learning is a motivating and engaging way for children to learn math. Students want to play the games over and over again! Third grade student, My’Jhae Waters says, “We have a lot of fun playing games with Mrs. Singer. There are games where we use dice, shake them and add them up. The person with the highest number won! My math is improving!”.

This program is funded through a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant. You can support local afterschool programs like this through volunteerism, advocacy and in-kind donations. For more information about or to offer support for WCPS afterschool programs, contact Tamara Mills at
