There is an art to writing, a challenge, a necessity to learn how. Writing can become something that students enjoy, do for a hobby, or even get excited about. Yet for some, writing can be a daunting task.

As the demands for writing clear and coherent essays increases in younger grades, so has the need to put writing in the forefront. This year, more than ever, writing has taken a dominant front, in the 4th grade curriculum. Teachers who work with 4th grade students in the OCES Homework Academy have turned Thursdays into Writing Days! These teachers, with their enthusiasm and love of writing, work diligently with 4th grade students on their written responses. These written responses are based on a core text, and once the students have read and analyzed the text, students are expected to write to text. Teachers may help students gather ideas for how to begin their essay or they may work with a group around evidence from the text that should be included in a written response. The ultimate goal is to help our 4th grade students develop clear and coherent writing which communicates their ideas from a piece of text.

Many 4th grade students from the 1st and 2nd session of the Afterschool Program are returning for the 3rd session. We are excited to continue this writing work with these same students. Their classroom teachers are seeing their confidence and writing techniques grow over the course of this year. It's great to know that the writing work being taught in the classroom is being applied and strengthened in the Afterschool Program!

Ocean City's afterschool programs are funded from local operating funds. You can support local afterschool programs like this through volunteerism, advocacy and in-kind donations.
