On Tuesday afternoons you can hear music coming from the 5th grade hallway of Snow Hill Middle School. It is the sound of fourth and fifth graders participating in Dance Club! The Dance Club provides students with after school exercise to upbeat music. Not only are these students working on their physical health, but their social and emotional health as well.

"We like to spend a lot of time on team building activities to strengthen our group. Social activities like this teach empathy and kindness. I have noticed a positive difference in how group members are treating each other outside of the club too," Afterschool Teacher Emily Taylor states.

The students are able to collaboratively work together to design creative routines and perform them for other group members. Activities like these help students learn the value of teamwork and cooperation, which will hopefully translate into their daily classroom routines. Providing this club has allowed students to step outside of their comfort zone and participate in physical exercise while having fun!

SHMS's afterschool programs are funded through 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants and local operating funds. You can support local afterschool programs like this through volunteerism, advocacy and in-kind donations.
